Acute Stress Disorder (ASD)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD)

Understanding Traumatic Stress

Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) is a short-term medical condition occurring during the first month following a traumatic event. In contrast, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex Post-Traumatic Disorder (CPTSD) are characterized by symptoms lasting beyond four weeks. PTSD is typically associated with single, isolated events, while CPTSD develops as a result of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) occurring before age 18 years. ACEs include physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, emotional or physical neglect, parental separation, incarceration of a family member, and mental illness or substance misuse in the home.

Although PTSD and CPTSD share common symptoms such as flashbacks, hypervigilance, and avoidance, they differ in nature, duration, and pattern of stressors. CPTSD often includes negative self-concept, emotional dysregulation, impulse control challenges, and interpersonal difficulties. Symptoms are often accompanied by feelings of shame, guilt, and isolation. Over time, hormonal stress caused by PTSD and CPTSD can lead to heart, lung, and cancer-related diseases. At Rising Hope, we won't ask you to relive your trauma. We will teach, train, and work alongside other healthcare providers, to help our clients heal.

Children and Adolescents Affected by Trauma

Complex trauma in children and adolescents, caused by prolonged exposure to traumatic events, affects emotional regulation, attention, self-perception, relationships, physical health, and the meaning they assign to experiences. Symptoms include difficulties with memory, self-management, emotion regulation, low self-esteem, mistrust, and somatic issues like headaches and stomach distress. Targeted strategies are essential to foster resilience, aid recovery, and help children regain stability and hope (4,7). Rising Hope's trauma support specialists are trained in targeted strategies and techniques that foster resilience and aid in healing.

Take Control of Anxiety Triggers and Symptoms

At Rising Hope, we specialize in helping clients to rewire the brain's anxiety pathways. Life experiences shape your brain’s responses to everyday stimuli, such as sights, sounds, smells, or critical tones. These triggers can activate fight, flight, or freeze responses, which may evolve into maladaptive coping strategies. Through evidence-based techniques, we can teach you how to retrain your brain, regain control, and enhance your mental well-being. Start your resilience journey today!
